Greyville Races Live

The course itself at Greyville Racecourse is pear-shaped with many unique features that make for some great racing action. The track is a turf track with a circumference of 2,800 metres. From 2,400 to 1,800 metres in from the finish the horse face a long uphill section before running downhill for the next 800 metres or so. The home stretch is flat, all of which helps combine for close racing as those horses strong on the uphill or downhill sections are reeled in by those that love the flat as they race to the finish line.

Inside of the outer turf track is a 2,000-metre all-weather ‘Polytrack’ which was built in 2014 and inside of the all-weather track is the Royal Durban Golf Club.

Greyville is home to many of the most prestigious races in South Africa including the Durban July Handicap and the Greyville Gold Cup, held in August. Both of these Group 1 races attract huge crowds and some of the best horses, trainers and jockey in South Africa.

Horse racing in KwaZulu Natal has a long history going back just under 200 years with the first race meeting on record dated in July 1844. The current track at Greyville has held races since 1896 and the Durban July race was first run in 1897.

The track holds many South African records including hosting the first even Sunday meeting (February 1996) and the first South African race to be run under floodlights.
