The sport is controlled by the National Horseracing Authority, which was set up in that same first race year. The NHA, formerly known as The Jockey Club of Southern Africa, are headquartered at Turffontein, one of the country’s leading horse racing tracks.
The authority oversees racing at all of the racecourses in South Africa (Durbanville Racecourse, Fairview Racecourse, Flamingo Park, Greyville Racecourse, Kenilworth Racecourse, Scottsville Racecourse, Turffontein Racecourse and Vaal Racecourse) and they also oversee the racing at Barrowdale Park in Harare, Zimbabwe.
Whilst there are a number of major events held on the racing calendar in South Africa, there is of course some stand out race meetings to take place in SA with the Durban July Handicap, held at Greyville Racecourse and run since 1897, is arguably the biggest event with 50,000 fans in attendance each year.
Winners form that race have gone onto enjoy success son the international stage including horses such as Colorado King, London News and Ipi Tombe.
Other races of note to be run in South Africa include the Summer Cup, held at Turffontein Racecourse in Johannesburg and the Sun Met, held at Kenilworth racetrack in Cape Town.
