Watch Racing From Chester Live

Chester racecourse is one of the oldest and smallest racecourses in the world, with a history going back to 1539, when the first race at the course was registered.

Offering a track of just 1 mile and 1 furlong in length, the course is known for close racing and for great action and when you couple in the small and historic nature of Chester races, it is no wonder that it retains a certain charm and is amongst the most popular courses with fans.

As you would expect from a racecourse with so much history to it, Chester has a long and fascinating history but the site of the course on the banks of the River Dee goes back even further as it was the site of a Roman port and a settlement during the dark ages.

The site of the course was also the home of the Chester Midsummer Watch Parade that was outlawed by Oliver Cromwell and ended in 1677.

The town historic walls abuts the course and the iconic Grosvenor Bridge is located at the south-eastern corner of the course.

It was Mayor Henry Gee who consented to horse racing at Chester and it was he who the term gee-gee comes from and who was the inspiration for the name of this very website.

Whilst established in the 1500’s, races were held in an open field until 1817 when the courses first grandstand was built and an entrance fee wasn’t needed until 1897.

Today the course is home to modern grandstands and all of the facilities you would expect from a top horse racing track and as the course is just a short stroll from the shops, bars, cafes, restaurant sand attractions of the historic city of Chester, it is a course that always has great attendances and a festival like atmosphere that always adds to the racing on offer.

As you would expect from a racecourse with so much history and prestige, there are a number of stand out races held at the course each year, with the best of the best held at the courses iconic festival held in May.

The Cheshire Oaks is a listed race run over 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 79 yards for fillies aged 3 years old.

The Chester Vase is a group 3 race run over 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 66 yards for 3 old horses.

The Ormonde Stakes is a group 3 race run over 1 mile, 5 furlongs and 89 yards for horses aged 4 and over.

The Dee Stakes is a listed race run over 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 75 yards for horses aged 3 years old.

The Huxley Stakes is a group 2 race run over 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 75 yards for horses aged 4 years old and over.

The Chester Cup is a handicap race run over 2 miles, 2 furlongs and 147 yards for horses aged 4 years old and older.
