Horse racing from Lingfield is available to watch year round thanks to the mix of flat and National Hunt jump racing on offer with flat racing taking place on an all-weather track and with jump racing taking place on the more traditional turf course.

In the main it is flat racing that takes place throughout the main summer season on the turf track whilst it is jump racing that takes place throughout the winter and of course flat racing does continue throughout the winter on the all-weather track at Lingfield Park.

Racing at Lingfield Park can be traced back to 1890 when the track was opened by the Prince of Wales who later became King Edward VII and who also allowed the owners of the course to use the Prince of Wales features in the tracks logo and heading.

Initially the course only offered jump racing but it did not take long for Jockey Club to be granted permission to race flat races, starting in 1894.

Since that date, both jump racing and flat racing has been held continuously at the course outside of the war years when the war office requisitioned the racecourse and racing was ended for the duration.

The course was handed back to its owners who sold it to Ladbrokes in 1974 before it was sold again to Arena Leisure who made the decision to invest in a polytrack all-weather surface, which was first opened in November 2001.

The turf track also underwent improvements and a new grandstand was built in 2004.

All of those improvements to the course and to the infrastructure of Lingfield made for a much better track and helped it to attract better horses and bigger names to improve the quality of the racing.

That was highlighted in 2009 when the horse Matsunosuke became the highest rated horse to win on an all-weather track in Great Britain.

With the track having such a long history, it is no surprise that there are many notable races held at the course including the Cleves Stakes, Winder Derby Trail, Winter Derby, Hever Sprint Stakes, the Spring Cup and the International Trial (which are all run on the all-weather flat course) whilst the Cartwell Fillies Stakes, the Lingfield Oaks Trial and the Lingfield Derby Trial are all race don the flat turf track.

The good news for fans is that with so many races of note and with the quality of racing continuing to improve at Lingfield, it has never been easier to watch the action live.

Many fans of a certain age may now the course due to its appearance in the 1954 British film The Rainbow Jacket which featured Robert Morley, Kay Walsh, Bill Owen, Honor Blackman and Sid James and was direct by Basil Dearden.

The film story featured a champion jockey whose career came tumbling down after he was found to have taken a bribe but he is looking for redemption by taking a young rider under his wing and tuition.

The film featured a number of jockeys including Gordon Richards.
