The thoroughbred racing track at Carlisle is actually located just outside of the town itself in the small village of Blackwell in Cumbria and that tends to help the course to maintain a friendly atmosphere with most in attendance been local fans from the north west and from Cumbria, North Yorkshire and across the border into Scotland.

The track is 1 mile and 4 furlongs in circumference with a steeple uphill finish over the last half mile or so which makes it a good course for horses with good stamina and who are known for a late burst of energy at the end of races but with the courses location as one of the most northern in England, you need to take into account the course conditions which can be very heavy, especially for National Hunt racing throughout the winter.
