Chepstow Races Live

The track at Chepstow is an oval layout of just under 2 miles in length. Races are run around the left handed, undulating track which is used for both Flat Racing and National Hunt racing.

The finishing straight at Chepstow is 5 furlong sin length, which gives horses running in Chases 5 jumps to clear whilst a complete circuit gives horses the challenge of 11 jumps.

For sprint races and for many flat races, Chepstow also offers a straight miles courses.

Chepstow is one of the biggest and most active horse racecourses in Wales (the other 2 being Bangor-on-Dee and Ffos Las), with Chepstow offers events all year round both on and off of the course, with concerts, weddings and conferences just as important to the finances of the course as the (roughly) 30-35 days of horse racing action on offer.

Chepstow races offers a number of notable races with both Hurdle and Chase races featuring prominently.

The Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle, run in October over 2 miles and 4 furlongs, the Persian War Novices Hurdle, also held in October over 2 miles and 4 furlongs, the Final Juvenile Hurdle, run in December over 2 miles and 110 yards.

The major race to be held at Chepstow is the Welsh Grand National, held in December over 3 miles, 5 furlongs and 110 yards.

The early days of the course were through with financial difficulties and up until 1927, the course only featured flat racing and it was flat racing that continued to be the biggest attraction for the curse with tops races including the Welsh Derby, the Welsh Oaks and the Welsh St Leger.

In 1933, history was made at the course when top jockey Gordon Richards won 11 straight races, 6 on one day and 5 on the next before losing in his 12th outing. Coming 2nd in a close race.

Over the years, the courses hurdle and steeplechase racing courses have continued to give great action and to really develop in terms of the quality on offer and it is National Hunt racing that offers the biggest races at Chepstow.

As one of only 3 racecourses in Wales, along with Ffos Las and Bangor-on-Dee, it will come as no surprise that Chepstow is home to some of the biggest races in the Principality.

Amongst the most notable races for fans mostly are run at the end of the calendar year.
