Horse racing Salisbury has a long history which can be traced back to the mid-16th century with many superstars of the sport winning at the course including Gimcrack (in 1768), Eclipse (in 1769), Sun Chariot (in 1941), Mill Reef (in 1970), Brigadier Gerard (in n1970), Sir Percy (in 2005) and Look Here (in 2007) have all won at the course.

In 1949, for Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s Colonist II made its debut at the course in a winning effort before claim glory at Ascot later that year.

Famous jockeys have made their debuts at the course with Lester Pigott riding in public for the first time at age 12 whilst the American jockey Steve Cauthen made his British debut in 1979 with a winning effort on Marquee Universal.

As a flat racing only racecourse, the racing at Salisbury takes place throughout the summer months, normally starting in late April and continuing until October.

Racing is mostly of a handicap nature, which means the racing at the track tends to be close and exciting and it is also home to a number of maidens which feature young horses with a tough of the unknown about them and many of these have gone onto make a name on the biggest stage.

There are a number of standout races held at the course including the Cathedral Stakes (a listed race run over 6 furlongs for horses aged 3 and over), the Upavon Fillies Stakes (a listed race run over 1 mile, 1 furlong and 198 yards for 3 year old fillies and above), the Sovereign Stakes (a group 3 race of 1 mile in length for horses 3 years old and above) and the Dick Pool Fillies Stakes (a group 3 race run over 6 furlongs for 2 year old fillies).

The Stonehedge Stakes is a popular race which is open to 2 year olds and run over 1 mile in August and it is also a popular breeding ground for young local horses to make a name for themselves and to show their worth.

The earliest big race to grab the attention of the racing public at the course was the Kings Plate, a race for 6 year olds run in 1723 which saw the winner receive their trophy from the then King of England, George I.

That set the table for the great racing to come down the years and really established the course as one of the best in the South West of England.
