Sedgefield Races Live

Sedgefield is a left handed course which features National Hunt jump racing only over its interesting track which features a steep downhill followed by an uphill climb to the finish after the final jump.

Horse racing in the village of Sedgefield can be traced back to 1732 with official race meets starting in 1846 but the current course didn’t really start to be a success until 1927 when the course as it is now started to really take shape.

Since then however the course has been hit by problems with the track nearly closing on 3 occasions but Sedgefield has also enjoyed numerous upgrades and improved quality of races. Since around 200 and the takeover of the course by Northern Racing the course has had many upgrades with the parade ring/ winner’s enclosure, bars and eateries and the course drainage enjoying the benefit of £600,000’s worth of upgrades.

Sedgefield racecourse has some notable races including The Durham National, a steeplechase run over three and three quarter miles.

Sedgefield racecourse is a smaller racecourse located in the north-east of England, between the town of Sedgefield and the city of Durham and offers National Hunt racing for around 10 months of the year.

The left-handed course, with a finishing straight of around 3 furlongs is famed for a steep incline followed by an uphill run to the finish after the last fence which makes it a challenge for horses and jockeys alive.

Racing in the area has a long history going way back to 1732 but it wasn’t until 1804 when racing became more organised and formal and it took until 1846 for regular meetings to be held.

For much of its existence it was almost a case or organised racing in a field at Sedgefield but over the years there have been more and more facilities added to the course.

The most notable race held at the course is the Durham National, a steeplechase run in October over 3 and a quarter miles.

Nowadays there is a good mix of racing over fences and hurdles and plenty of action outside of the usual National Hunt season to keep everyone’s interest going in the warmer months.

For much of the courses history, the run in from the courses last fence to the winning posts was a huge 525 yards, which is even longer than the Grand National course at Aintree but in 1994 a new fence was added to the final circuit of races and make for a conventional run in and for closer and in many ways, fairer racing.

The reason for the course having such a long run in was down to the fact that the last race before the finishing line was a water jump and with the last jump on any race not allowed to be any other than a regular fence, the horses simply ran past the jump and sprinted home.

Over the past decade or so, a series of hurdle races that were sponsored by John Wade, a local racecourse owner, and run throughout the season at the course were upgraded to become a series of novices hurdles that culminated in a final race run on the same race day as the courses biggest race, the Durham National.

That has added a whole new level of interest in the course and has made the Durham National day a must watch occasion for fans of horse racing.
