Fontwell Park Races Live

Fontwell Park is unique in that it is the only British racecourse to feature a figure of eight chase course. Fontwell Park also offers an oval hurdle course.

The recourse first opened in 1924 although racing in the area can be traced back much further than that with training of race horses been dated back to 1887.

The main race of the Fontwell Park National Hunt season is arguably the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle, which is run over miles and 4 furlongs in February and acts as a trial for the Cheltenham Festival.

Another notable race is the Southern National which is a Grade 3 hurdle race run over 3 miles and 4 furlongs in November.

Fontwell Park offers a garden like setting, with many of the enclosure been historical in nature which all adds to the charm of this small and intimate racecourse.

In recent years the owners of the course have made many improvements to the grandstands and enclosures with a focus on new levels of hospitality which allows the course to offer functions all year round.

No matter if you know it as Fontwell Park or simply as Fontwell, the course based in the village of the same name in West Sussex is a popular medium sized racecourse that has had some interesting moments down the years.

First opened in 1924, the course was founded by Alfred Day who trained horses in the area. Originally the layout of the track featured a regular hurdles course with a figure of 8 steeplechase to maximise the use of space in what was only a relatively small plot of land for a racecourse.

The course was the location of the first winner for Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II after her horse Monaveen won the Chichester Handicap Chase in late 1949.

In 1984, famous jockey John Francome became the National Hunt jockey with the most wins after picking up his 1036th victory to overtake Stan Mellor, although that record has now been broken.

The main race at the track is the National Spirit Hurdle, a grade 2 race run over 2 miles and 4 furlongs for horses that are aged 4 years old and older.

The race is a recognised trial for the Cheltenham Festival and it has seen a number of horses that have gone on to excel at the famous festival of racing.

My Way de Solzen won in 2006 before going onto win the World Hurdle at Cheltenham, Lough Derg won in both 2008 and 2009, Trenchant won in 2010 whilst Celestial Halo won in 2011.

Another big race at the course in the Southern national, a class 3 chase run over 3 miles and 3 furlongs for horses that are aged 4 years old and over.
