The race is run in June each and is open to all 3-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies.

The Derby Stakes is part of the 5 Classics and is thought of as the most prestigious of these great races. Thanks to been Britain’s richest races, The Derby is often referred to as the ‘Blue Ribbon’ of the turf.

The Derby Stakes also is the middle leg of the Triple Crown, with the race preceded by the 2000 Guineas and is followed by the St Leger.

The Derby Stakes is the original derby and although other great races such as the Kentucky Derby uses the name, the Epsom Derby is the only race to be given by the Earl of Derby himself.

The Epsom Derby is the original derby and along with St Helens vs Wigan Warriors matches in Rugby League it is the only sporting event to have actually been given the name of a Derby by the Earl of Derby.

The popularity of Saints v Wigan has led to all other local rivalries in team sports giving the name derby to matches between those rivals whilst in horse racing the original derby has seen many other races take it’s name and some of those have gone on to be iconic races of the sport but nothing can match the original which for many is still the best.

No matter if you know it as the Epsom Derby, the Derby, or the Derby takes, the race is one of the blue riband event son the British horse racing calendar and is one of the most popular races for riders, trainers, owners and fans alike.

The race was inaugurated in 1780, making it one of the oldest races in the world to still be run and as one of the prestigious races still to this very day, it is no surprise that the race has lots of records that have proven to be tough to break.

One of the icons of the race, Lester Piggott is the jockey with the most wins in the Derby with 9 wins in all coming in 1954 (on Never Say Die), 1957 (on Crepello), 1960 (on St Paddy), 1968 (on Sir Ivor), 1970 (on Nijinsky), 1972 (on Roberto), 1976 (on Empery), 1977 (on The Minstrel) and 1983 (on Teenoso).

There have been 4 trainers to have won the race on 7 occasions with Robert Robson dominating in the early 1800’s, John Porter in the late 1800’s, Fred Darlin in the early to mid-1900’s and with Aiden O’Brien dominating the modern era.

Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor have been the most successful owners with 8 wins whilst the iconic Shergar won by a record 10 lengths in 1981.
1862 saw the most ever runners for the race with 34 whilst 1794 saw the smallest field with just 4 horses racing.

The iconic nature of the race and the global audience that it is now shown to has led to a number of important moments that have gone down in history for fans of the sport, going right back to the early days of the race, including a horse that was brought down by a spectator in 1805, the winners Middleton and Amato winning on its first and race in 1825 and 1938 and the winner Running Rein been disqualified in 1844 after it was found to actually be a 4 year old named Maccabeus.

The 1894 winner was owned the then Prime Minister the 5th Earl of Rosebery whilst in 1909 the race was won by Minoru; a horse owned by King Edward VII.

1927 saw the first race televised by the BBC, whilst startling stalls were not used until the 1967 running.

In 1989 the race saw Terimon come 2nd who had odds of 500/1 making it the longest priced horse to be placed in the race in its history.

Alex Greaves became the first female jockey to participate in 1996 whilst 2007 saw Frankie Dettori win his first derby after 14 previous failures onboard Authorised.

In 2012, Aiden O’Brien was the trainer of the winning horse whose jockey was Joseph O’Brien, his son, to become the first ever winning father/son trainer/jockey duo.

Aiden O’Brien became the first trainers to win 3 straight races in 2014 whilst his daughter became the first female jockey in 2017 to not finish last in the race.
