The Doncaster Cup is a Group 2 flat horse race, run at Doncaster racecourse and is thought to be the world’s oldest horse race.

First established in 1766, the race pre-dates the St Leger Stakes by a full 10 years. The Doncaster Cup is open to horses aged three years or older and is run over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621) making it a race for stayers.

In fact, the Doncaster Cup is the final leg of the Stayers Triple Crown, with the Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup.

The Doncaster Cup takes place in September each season, making it one of the biggest races of the flat seasons end and it takes place during the ever popular four day St Leger Festival.

The Doncaster Cup, known locally as the Donny Cup, run as you would expect at the Doncaster Racecourse in South Yorkshire was inaugurated way back in 1766 and is not only one of the oldest races to still be running today but it is the oldest race to still be running at Doncaster. Whilst he course St Leger takes is the most famous race run at the track, the Doncaster Cup is 10 years older than that race and is often thought of as the race for local fans.

The race first started life been run on Cantley Common before moving to its present day location in 1776.

Initially the race was run over 4 miles but it was shortened in 1825 to been 2 miles and 5 furlongs before been reduced again in 1891 to 2 miles and 2 furlongs.

It has changed a coupe of times alongside those one but it is still a race that determines strong stayers as it is run over 2 miles, 1 furlong and 197 yards, or 3600 metres if you prefer.

The race is the final le of the Stayers Cup along with the Gold Cup and the Goodwood Cup and the race is also the only one in the British Isles to give the winner a ballot-exempt entry into the Melbourne Cup.
