Eclipse Stakes Live

The Eclipse Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race that takes place at Sandown Park. The race is run over a distance of 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 7 yards (2018 meters).

The race is open to horses aged 3 years and older and takes place each year in early July.

Named after a famous 18th century racehorse called Eclipse, the Eclipse Stakes was first run in 1896 and at the time was the richest purse in British horse racing.

That has led to the Eclipse Stakes been able to attract a high standard field right from the off which has allowed it to become one of the most popular horse races on the racing calendar and also the race that Sandown Park is most famous for.

The Eclipse Stake is one of the most historic horse races in the country after been inaugurated way back in 1886. Raced at Sandown Park in the small Surrey town of Esher, the race has been one of the strongest flat races since its inception.

Offering a prize fund of £10,000, donated by Leopold de Rothschild, the first running of the race saw the winner Bendigo pick up the biggest cheque in British racing history.

In 1889, the race showed that it was a high quality race from the off as it was won by Ayrshire who had won the Derby the previous year.

In 1903 the first 3 horses past the post, Ard Patrick, Sceptre and Rock Sand, had 7 classics wins between them.

The race is run over 1 mile, 1 furlong and 209 yards, or 2002 metres if you prefer, and is available to horses three years old and up.

As a race with such a long history and offering so much prestige up to the current day, it is no surprise that there are a number of records that have proven hard to beat.

There have been 5 horse who have won the race on more than 1 occasion with Orme winning in 1892 & 1893, Buchan winning in 1919 & 1020, Polyphontes in 1924 & 1925, Mtoto in 1987 & 1988 as well as Halling in 1995 & 1996.

The leading jockeys is Lester Piggott who won the race on 7 occasions racing on Mystery IX (in n1959), Darius (in 1955), Artic Explorer (in 1957), St Paddy (in 1961), Pieces of Eight (in 1066), Wolver Hollow (in 1969) and Artaius (in 1977).

Alec Taylor Jr and Sir Michael Stoute are the jointed record trainers with 6 wins apiece whilst the 17th Earl of Derby, Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor, Sue Magnier and Godolphin are the owners who have jointly on the race the most times with 5 wins a piece.

The great news for all fans of horse racing and especially for fans wanting to watch the Eclipse Stake is that it has never been easier to watch all of the action live.

No longer do you need to be at the track in person or make the trip to your local bookies in the hope that they are showing the action.

Now you can simply watch live on any of the bookies featured on GGTV, so long as you have made the minimum wagering requirement.

With the smallest acceptable bet normally enough for you to be able to watch the action live, that needn’t be too much of an issue as in all likelihood you are wanting to watch live from Sandown Park, you are wanting to bet on the action and to hopefully back your chosen horse to a win.

The Eclipse Stakes is a group 1 race that is run on a right-handed tur track with a weight limit of 8st 11lb for 3 year olds and 9st 7lb for horse of 4 years and above whilst fillies and mares get a 3lb allowance.

Watch the action live online via our Sandown Park live stream partners who bring you the whole of the Eclipse Stakes live via their live stream services.

Historical Moments In The Races History

As you would expect from a race such as this one, a race with so much history and prestige, there have been a number of stand out and notable moments own the years that have made it into the record books.

The first running of the race came way back in 1886 when the horse Bendigo came in first under the control of Tom Cannon sr, who went onto win the second running of the race on Orbit to become the first jockey to win back to back races. In that 1888 victory, Orbit was owned by the 1st Duke of Westminster, who was the most dominant owner of the race for much of its early running.

The 1892 and 1893 editions of the race were won by the horse Orme, who become the first runner to not only win twice to win back to back races.

The 1897 running of the race was won by Persimmon, who was owned by the then Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII, to become the first royal winner.

The 1910 was the first running of the race, and the only one to date, to have 2 winners as Lemberg (ridden by Bernard Dillon and trained by Alec Taylor jr) and Neil Gow (ridden by Danny Maher and trained by Percy Peck) finished in a dead heat.

The race didn’t take place between 1915-1918 due to the first World War, with the race dominated by the trainer Alec Taylor jr upon its return as he won the next 3 races and 4 of the next 5.

The race also didn’t take place between 1940-1945 due to the second World War.

Lester Piggott picked up his first ever win at the 1955 edition on the back of Darius.

In 1973, the race was won by Scottish Rifle but what made that such a famous moment in the races running was the fact that the 1973 edition was the first, and to date only, time the race was run at Kempton Park.

If you look at the record books for 1976, the winner of the race is listed as Wollow under the stewardship of Gianfranco Dettori but on the day it was a horse named Trepan who crossed the line in first place but was then disqualified after failing a drug test.

In 1996, Lanfranco ‘Frankie’ Dettori won the race on the back of Daylami to become the firs first son to follow in his fathers footsteps and win the race.

The 2020 edition of the race was a unique one all around due to the ongoing pandemic but the biggest change from a sporting point of view was the fact that three year olds were not allowed to take their place in the race.
