International Stakes Live

The International Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race that takes place at York Racecourse.

Run over 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 88 yards (2,092 meters), the International Stakes takes place annually in August.

The International Stakes is open to all horses aged 3 years or older and is the major race of the opening day of York racecourses Ebor Festival.

The race offers the largest purse at York and since its inception in 1972, the race has gone on to become one of the more popular races at York.

The history of the race is a long and fascinating one since it was first envisaged and established by Major Leslie Petch, the then clerk of the course in 1972 and back then it was named after the sponsors of the race and called the Gold Cup.

The inaugural race was won by Roberto who in doing so established the races quality as it went onto win the Derby in the same year. The horse to come second in that years race, Brigadier Gerard suffered the only defeat of his career.

The International Stakes has had a number of long term sponsors down the years which has led to the race having a number of names including the Juddmonte International and the Matchmaker International.

The race is currently part of the iconic Ebor Festival meeting at York which is the richest race meeting at the course and attracts not only huge crowds in person in York but also watching online and on tv around the world.

As such a prestigious race it will be no surprise that there are a number of records held by stars of the sport and that have proven difficult to break, with most record jointly held.

The most successful horses to have won the race on the most occasions are Dahlia (in 1974 and 1975), Ezzoud (in 1993 and 1994) and Halling (in 1995 and 1996).

The jockeys with the most wins are the iconic pair of Lester Piggott (on Dahlia in 1974 and 1975, on Hawaiian Sound in 1978, on Commanche Run in 1985 and Rodrigo de Triano in 1992) and Frankie Dettori (on Halling in 1996, Singspiel in 1997, Sakhee in 2001, Sulamani in 2004 and Authorised in 2007), who both have 5 wins.

The trainers with the most wins are Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien who both have 6 wins a piece whilst the owners with the most wins are Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor, who also both have 6 wins as joint owners of a number of horses.
