Watch the St Leger Live From Doncaster
The event was devised by Anthony St Leger and was originally known as A sweepstake of 25 Guineas and was originally run over 2 miles.
The race was initially run at Cantley Common with the inaugural race been held on the 24th September 1776.
Soon after the first race, the name the St Leger Stakes was decided in true Yorkshire spirit in a nearby pub called the Red Lion Inn. Many wanted the race to be named the Rockingham Stakes, after the Marquess of Rockingham but he decided it should be named after the person to come up with the idea for the race and so the St Leger Stakes was born.
The current site of course first held the race soon after in 1778 and in 1800, the race broke out of been a local race to a national race when a horse aptly named Champion won the Derby and the St Leger in the same year to make headlines all over the horse racing world.
In 1813, the length of the race was shortened to 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 193 yards and with some tweaks here and there, it has remained the same since.
There have been a few occasions when the race has been moved from Doncaster including during World War 1, when it was hosted at Newmarket and during World War 2 when it moved to Thirsk, then Manchester, then Newmarket and then onto York.
In 1989 the race moved to Ayr after issues with the course at Donny and in 2006 it moved up the A1 to York due to improvements been made to Doncaster.
The fame and prestige of the St Leger Stakes has led to a number of other races been inspired by the original at Doncaster including the Irish St Leger (held at Curragh in the Republic of Ireland), the Prix Royal-Oak (held at Longchamp in France), the Deutsches St Leger (held at Dortmund in Germany), the St Leger Italiano (held at Milan in Italy), Kikuka-sho (held at Kyoto in Japan), the New Zealand St Leger (held at Trentham Racecourse), and the VRC St Leger (held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia).
With so much history and prestige, it is also no surprise that there are a number of hard to beat records associated with the race with Bill Scott been the leading jockey after amassing an incredible 9 wins, John Scott been the trainer with the most wins after amassing 16 wins in the mid 1800’s and Archibald Hamilton, the 9th Duke of Hamilton having the most wins as an owner with 7.
No matter if the race is set to be a record breaking one this year or not, you can watch all of the action live online via our St Leger live stream partners.
